Ahwatukee is a south Phoenix neighborhood close to downtown, but it seems like its own independent city due to its northern South Mountain Park border. To the south and west, the Gila River Indian Community borders Ahwatukee; Interstate 10 borders Ahwatukee on the east. Most of the city of Ahwatukee was originally ranchland. In 1921, the first residents settled in Ahwatukee. The name Ahwatukee was given by the second inhabitants of the ranch: Ahwatukee is a Crow Indian work meaning "house of dreams."
In 1971, planned residential community development began in the Ahwatukee Foothills area. Developers purchased land and built thousands of houses. Planned community development was hugely successful, and today the population of Ahwatukee is approximately 90,000.
