Despite its name, the city of Maricopa is located in Pinal County as opposed to Maricopa County. Maricopa is 20 miles south of Phoenix and about 20 miles to the northwest of the city of Casa Grande. The city has experienced a great deal of growth thanks in large part to its reasonably convenient access to nearby cities like Chandler and Tempe, as well as downtown Phoenix, and affordable real estate.
Maricopa became incorporated in late 2003 as a city with a population of approximately 5,000. By 2007, its population was estimated at around 34,000. The development of parks and recreational facilities as well as retail shops and restaurants and expanded city services in Maricopa continues to try to keep pace with its growth. The City of Maricopa is passionate about bringing new businesses and employment opportunities to town to support its booming population. The population of Maricopa is expected to escalate upwards of 200,000 by the year 2025.
Maricopa is still developing its own cultural and historic attractions and outdoor community recreational facilities. Beautiful, 19-acre Pacana Park opened in Maricopa in 2006. This is the first major park to open in the city and it features tennis courts, a playground and several sports fields including soccer and football areas.
Another attraction just outside of the city of Maricopa is Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino. This magnificent casino offers Maricopa residents plenty of resort-style amenities in addition to gaming. There are plenty of opportunities for dining and two lounges host live entertainment events. Its beautiful hotel grounds feature lush greenery, a courtyard, and an exotic swimming pool. Harrah's Ak-chin Casino also serves as a source of employment for residents of Maricopa and the surrounding area.
Golfing is another popular past time around Maricopa. The Southern Dunes golf course at the private Royal Dunes Golf Club facility is an 18-hole course for golfers who enjoy a friendly atmosphere, but take their game seriously. The Duke at Rancho El Dorado is a public 18-hole golf course located within the master-planned Rancho El Dorado community in Maricopa.
