The city of Mesa is located in Phoenix's Southeast Valley 20 miles from downtown Phoenix. Mesa is the third largest city in Arizona, and its present population is over 400,000.
Mesa is situated above the banks of the Salt River and features beautiful scenic views in all directions. Mountain views are visible to the north, east and south, while to the west is a gorgeous view of the valley. The city itself features a variety of attractions including many museums, art galleries and performance centers, shopping areas and historical sites. Just outside the city are wide-open areas and plenty of recreational facilities and attractions including tennis courts, parks and more than 25 golf courses.
The historic downtown section of Mesa features many diverse architectural attractions and interesting sites that tell the story of Mesa's Old West era past. The former Lehi School building that dates to 1913 is now the present location of the Mesa Historical Museum, dedicated to recounting the story of Mesa's early settlers and communities.
Other historic sites in downtown Mesa include the Ellis-Johnson home, the Vance Auditorium, the former Southside Hospital and the Alhambra Hotel. East of these historic attractions lays the Temple Historic District. This area consists of homes named after the early agricultural Mormon pioneers who helped found the city. The Arizona Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that was founded in 1927 is also located in the Temple Historic District.
The Mesa Arts Center is another unique attraction in this culturally rich city. It is presently the largest arts center in Arizona and hosts performing arts events as well as housing visual arts galleries and studios and classrooms devoted to art education. The Arts Center campus downtown is made up of three buildings, one of which is a four-theater complex.
Other popular downtown Mesa attractions include the Mesa Southwest Museum with its dinosaur exhibit and the Champlin Aircraft Fighter Museum, which contains a private collection of vintage aircraft. These are just a few of the many attractions Mesa offers residents and tourists alike. Despite its continuing growth and expansion, Mesa retains its small town charm and atmosphere as it undergoes impressive development.
