Peoria

Peoria is located in Maricopa County close to Glendale. Loop 101 links Peoria with other cities and areas throughout the Phoenix Valley. Like Glendale, Peoria is experiencing surging growth and development. Today it has a population of approximately 150,000.

Like many other communities in Phoenix's Northwest Valley, Peoria originated as an agricultural community before blossoming into a modern suburban center. The completion of the Arizona Canal in 1885 allowed the farmlands along the Salt River to flourish: the future of the settlement of Peoria was insured. The town of Peoria became incorporated in 1954, and today it is the fourth largest city in Arizona in terms of land area and the ninth largest in terms of population.

Peoria features a variety of recreational facilities, great schools, remarkable city services and much more. One of its most appealing characteristics is the small town ambience it has held onto throughout years of development and growth.

The huge Peoria Sports Complex is a wonderful source of entertainment for residents of Peoria. It is a Major League Baseball facility that is used year round for sports events and training, but festivals, concerts and other large public events are also held there. The area surrounding the Sports Complex features many unique shops and a variety of quality dining and drinking establishments.

Lake Pleasant located in the northern part of Peoria is another source of outdoor recreation. Residents enjoy water and jet skiing as well as swimming, sailing and fishing at Lake Pleasant. This is a tremendous 10,000-acre oasis in the desert that is the focal point of Lake Pleasant Regional Park. Hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing and camping are just some of the recreational activities available in the park. Several residential communities are in various stages of construction in highly desirable locations around Lake Pleasant.

Two other attractions in Peoria are the incredible Challenger Space Center of Arizona and the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts. The Challenger Space Center is a Smithsonian Institution affiliate museum offering space mission simulations. The Peoria Center for the Performing Arts was built as part of a downtown revitalization project taking place over the course of five years.
