NBAZ Charities to Host Signature Events in 2015

National Bank of Arizona (NB|AZ) has always been involved in the community. In April 2015, the company formed the philanthropic arm of the bank designed to assist a variety of worthwhile organizations in Arizona while improving the communities in our state. Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for National Bank of Arizona, Deborah Bateman, sat down with me to bring up to date on the latest developments with NBAZ Charities.

“We do three signature events during the year. Society of Chairs is one event, Taste of the Biltmore on October 1 is the second event, and the Winter Swing Charity Golf Outing on December 7 is the third,” explains Bateman.”Taste of the Biltmore is actually in its ninth year and continues to showcase the best restaurants and brightest culinary talents in the area. The upscale block party is the unofficial kick-off of the Arizona charity season. All proceeds from the Taste of the Biltmore event benefit NBAZ Charities.

“Taste of the Biltmore” began as a marketing event before we had NBAZ Charities,” Bateman says. “In years past, we would name a benefactor and all the net proceeds would go to one charity.This year we are funding NB|AZ Charities and the proceeds will be distributed out into the community.” Taste of the Biltmore will take place 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, on the NB|AZ campus located at 6001 N. 24 St., Phoenix. Some of the participating restaurants include Bluewater Grill, Blanco Tacos + Tequila, Sol Mexican Cocina, Zinburger, True Food Kitchen, Seasons 52, 21 Cakes and many other fine culinary establishments. Samples of a wide variety of foods will be served and Young’s Farm will be providing the adult beverages. “This year they are bringing a couple of mixologists with them,” Bateman adds. “There will be a little show on the side with those mixologists and it will be a packed event.” The primary benefactor for this year’s Taste of the Biltmore will be the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association.“We will be making a $10,000 donation to their Memorial Fund. The memorial is a tribute to all the firefighters that have been lost.” Local firemen will also be on hand at the Taste of the Biltmore event to mix and mingle with guests.

NBAZ Charities and its affiliated events represent all four of NB|AZ's value pillars: Giving, Fundraising, Corporate Citizenship and Engagement. The charity will concentrate on critical issues facing Arizona and bestow grants to those organizations making an impact in the areas of Affordable Housing, Economic Development, Arts and Culture, Education, Community Services, Health/Human Services and Neighborhood Stabilization.

The first NBAZ Charities Grant Cycle Workshop will take place Tuesday, September 29. “We are giving our employees an opportunity to donate to NBAZ Charities and we have elected an employee advisory group that is not only representative of our geographic presence throughout the state, but also job families.It includes individuals in Flagstaff, Yuma, Tucson and Phoenix and from all different job categories ranging from tellers and relationship managers to commercial lenders,” Bateman explains.

She continues, “The NBAZ Charities advisory group will get together on September 29 at our corporate campus. It is our intention to hold two grant-giving events during the course of the year. We will take the grant applications that not-for-profits use to apply for funds and our employee advisory group will review them and select the not-for-profits that will receive a donation from our pool.” The day will include two sessions in which those nonprofit organizations will come in to talk about their unique needs and the people that they serve in Arizona. Those seeking grants will also be able to meet the NB|AZ employees making the decisions for those grants. NB|AZ is committed to philanthropy at many levels and remarkably handles the banking of approximately 25 percent of all Arizona nonprofit organizations.

“NBAZ Charities is not corporate driven; it is all about the employees at National Bank of Arizona,” Bateman notes. “NBAZ Charities is a philanthropic organization that helps fund Arizona charities. We’re very specific that any donations must benefit Arizona families or causes. We’re very specific of that particular footprint. NBAZ Charities also engages our workforce in volunteer efforts so employees have the opportunity to give both monetarily and through volunteerism. We also sponsor volunteer days throughout the year.” Employees are encouraged to get involved in many different volunteer efforts that support the community on a variety of levels. The Winter Swing Golf Tournament is coming up on December 7, at Desert Highlands. This is a unique opportunity for Arizona CEOs and executives to raise awareness and money for local charities. Since 2009, Winter Swing has raised more than $350,000 for Arizona charities! “People can sign up for foursomes,” Bateman says.“There are also opportunities for sponsorships. Essentially, the way it works is that we invite a CEO to buy a foursome for $10,000 to play in the tournament and then, in return, we guarantee a minimum donation of $10,000 to the charity of their choice.” For more information on the Winter Swing Golf Tournament, visit
